Dr Kim Joon-Gon Called Home to be with the Lord

Dr. Kim Joon-Gon (김준곤, 金俊坤), founder of Korea Campus Crusade for Christ, has gone home to be with the Lord on the morning of 29th September 2009. He was 85 years of age.

Dr. Kim, a visionary and a faithful man of God, has been totally committed to reaching every person in Korea (and the world) for Christ. Many have come to know him as a person who loves God and had the capacity to think big for God, and have been deeply influenced by his passion for the Great Commission of the Lord Jesust Christ.

His passing on would be a great loss to Campus Crusade for Christ Ministry as well as the global Christian community.

Please be in prayer for the family during this hour of loss.

In Remembrance of Rev Kim Joon-Gon

...including my good friend Dr. Joon Gon Kim

Time and again, I have been able to press on, often against the naysaying of others around me, because I had received my goals from a supernatural Person. When I was convinced God wanted to accomplish some new, ambitious work through me, I continued to believe God even as I heard people cry, "That's impossible! Don't bother asking God for that -- it can't be done." As I looked to God, the sole object of my faith, I claimed His promises. Many others have done the same, including my good friend Dr. Joon Gon Kim.

Victory in God

Dr Kim has definitely left with us a remarkable legacy for the Lord. I pray that Dr Kim's vision for God's Kingdom would continue to grow in us. I pray that we will heed the challenge by Dr Douglass, not just to have the faith to continue with the mission, but to go beyond and exceed Dr Kim's vision for the glory of His Kingdom.

The Patriot

On a crisp, clear morning last fall, as Kim arrived at the Korea Campus Crusade complex, the milk-goat project was on his mind. He removed his shoes at the entrance, in Korean custom, then signaled an assistant to bring tea.

"There is great hope for North Korea," explains Kim, 79, ensconced in his book-lined office. "We must feed people first, for they are hungry, but I believe North Korea will come to Christ faster than South Korea has."

For nearly five decades now, Kim's driving desire has been to see the Korean people turn to Christ. That drive has given the one-time teacher of Korean literature such prominence that he was named co-chairman of the 2002 soccer World Cup host committee.

"Dr. Kim is the [leading] representative of Korean Christianity," says Rev. Lee Mahn-Shin, president of the Christian Council of Korea. "Most Koreans think of him as the model of a Christian, a man of prayer who loves our nation and our people."

Yet Kim would think of himself as a humble servant of God. He tells of the day his father, a Confucian scholar, taught him to write. His father grasped the boy's hand, which held a brush, and guided it in drawing the graceful Chinese characters. "Good job, son," he said at the end of the page.

"But I didn't draw those letters," says Kim. "He did. And anything I have done is like those letters—God did it through me."

Asked God to give him a love for the souls of his enemies

Dr. Kim says, "One night I was awakened by the noise of men calling my name. My family and I were taken where 60 human beings, including the old, and women and children, were being killed. Ten military men, all familiar villagers, were assigned to execute my family. My wife and father were slaughtered before my eyes. I was beaten and left for dead."

Kim survived the savage beating, and asked God to give him a love for the souls of his enemies. Kim led 30 of villagers to Christ, including the leader responsible for the death of his loved ones.

Dr. Kim has first-hand knowledge that Jesus Christ is the answer to Communism, as He is the answer to every other problem in life.

Fasting for the Father's Reward

My own serious consideration of fasting as a spiritual discipline began as a result of visiting Dr. Joon Gon Kim in Seoul, Korea.

"Is it true," I asked him, "that you spent 40 days in fasting prior to the evangelism crusade in 1980?"

"Yes, " he responded, "it is true."

Dr. Kim was chairman of the crusade expected to bring a million people to Yoido Plaza. But six months before the meeting the police informed him they were revoking their permission for the crusade. Korea at that time was in political turmoil and Seoul was under martial law. The officers decided they could not take the risk of having so many people together in one place. So Dr. Kim and some associates went to a prayer mountain and there spent 40 days before God in prayer and fasting for the crusade. Then they returned and made their way to the police station.

"Oh," said the officer when he saw Dr. Kim, "we have changed our mind and you can have your meeting!"

As I went back to the hotel I reflected that I had never fasted like that. Perhaps I had never desired a work of God with the same intensity . . . His body is marked by many 40 day fasts during his long spiritual leadership of God's work in Asia. Also, however, I haven't seen the miracles Dr. Kim has.
